Urban Management Centre (UMC) is a not-for-profit organization which, in collaboration with International City/County Management Association (ICMA), works towards professionalizing urban management in India. UMC provides technical assistance and support to the Indian state local government associations and implements programs that work towards improvement in cities by partnering with city governments. UMC's mission is to disseminate and exchange information between cities for better planning and implementation or urban practices aimed at providing better living conditions. UMC has been working with city governments in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Indonesia and several other Asian countries on projects that meet the complex demands of urban cities. UMC combines the experience of local government practitioners with that of seasoned national and international consultants to design, implements and evaluate municipal development and urban management projects. UMC is associated with International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and assists in implementing ICMA's programs in South Asia. Cities Share Best Practices: Urban Management Centre / ICMA representative in South Asia hosted a study tour of Ethiopia officials. The Indian cities of Navsari, Surat, and Vyara shared best practices in solid waste collection and disposal, financial management, and other municipal services with the officials during the study tour. "City Links Post Tsunami Recovery Initiative" adjudged best practice by Dubai International Award for Best Practices year 2008
“The City Links Post Tsunami Recovery Initiative” has been adjudged as one of the best practices by the Dubai International Award for Best Practices for the year 2008. The Initiative was undertaken by ICMA/UMC and supported by USAID and Govt. of Tamil Nadu established partnerships between Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Cities of Florida. The partnership program provided hands-on technical assistance, capacity building, and focused exchanges, complemented by small and targeted project assistance funding to support the recovery of these communities.
